There are 11 gardens maintained by the Suffolk Extension Master Gardeners at Lone Star Park on Highway 125 in Chuckatuck. Originally, the entrance to the park was on the Fire Station side of Highway 125. There is still one garden on that side of the road. Our second garden is at the current entrance which is across from the Fire Station and near the convergence of Hwy 125 and Crittenden Road. The entrance was changed for security issues at the Bob House Water Treatment Plant after 911. Gardens have continued to be added per park rangers’ requests.
As you travel into the park you will see two additional gardens on either side of the road at the bottom of the hill. Another garden is located directly across the bottom of the hill. Traveling to the right, you will find two additional gardens divided by a sidewalk that comes down from the Fire Station. A little further down that road you will find a very small garden at a kiosk. Traveling back towards the main entrance, continue straight and you will find an additional garden on the left at Cedar Creek. Continue traveling straight into the park and there is a garden at the apex of the loop. Continue towards the right of the loop, and after the circle, you will see a garden on the left-hand side of the road. Continue to the end of the loop and you will see one last kiosk garden.
Most all plants at Lone Star are native pollinators. However, one will also find examples of all kinds of plants that have been dug from our gardens. We believe in planting the right plant in the right space. We aim for different colors, textures, and scents that bloom at different times of the year. We try to plant plants that provide seeds and habitats for local wildlife.
